First Generation (2002-2009): High Risk, High Reward

It may have been unveiled after the turn of the millennium, but Porsche had designs on its first Cayenne SUV well before then. Its base V6 powertrain was ideal for those who chauffeured their families around in a luxury SUV while still enjoying an engaging and responsive ride, the Cayenne's peppier S and Turbo models stole the hearts of thrill-seekers, the Diesel model offered plenty of torque to tackle demanding journeys, and the S E-Hybrid rounded out the Cayenne stable with a powertrain that satisfied longtime Porsche lovers, enhanced the SUV's efficiency, and provided an attractive luxury option for those looking to go greener.

Third Generation (2017-Present): Refining the Gas Engine & Raising the Bar for Hybrid Performance

With the Cayenne's third generation came another reimagining of its sleek and elegant aesthetic, as Porsche treated its now long-running and lauded SUV to new bodywork while preserving the essence of its looks. The European automaker also made some substantial, yet well-received and worthwhile changes to its first SUV's powertrain lineup. Indeed, the 2019 model year saw the base Cayenne model return with a 3.0L turbocharged V6 engine with a generous 335 horsepower, while the Cayenne S was now the owner of a 2.9L twin-turbo V6 packing over 430 horses. Porsche kept busy with its first-ever SUV through the following year, as 2020 marked the debut of the Cayenne Coupe, a four-door model with a faster roofline and enhanced aerodynamics for those who craved an exhilarating and racy drive in a sportier package. The Cayenne's third and current generation also brought some compelling developments to its hybrid configurations, as the E-Hybrid model arrived in 2021 with the duo of a 3.0L turbo V6 engine and an electric motor for a combined 455 horsepower, while a new Turbo S E-Hybrid SUV paired the Cayenne Turbo's gas engine with plug-in hybrid hardware for 670 total horsepower, an unprecedented amount of brawn for a hybrid luxury SUV.

This current era in the Porsche Cayenne's history has also come with some welcome developments for the adored GTS model. Indeed, this version of the Cayenne SUV was given some added brawn in the 2021 model year, with Porsche playing on the S model's powertrain to equip the GTS with over 450 horsepower.

With a model lineup that now includes powertrains of varying sizes, power, capability, and efficiency, the Cayenne stable has evolved into arguably the most well-rounded luxury mid-size SUV on the market. The trepidation, doubts, and even the criticisms surrounding the Cayenne's original release have long been a thing of the past, as Porsche has made great efforts to consistently outdo the Cayenne's hardware and driving dynamics, all while remaining true to the traditions and staples that made Porsche an iconic automaker to begin with.
